In a powerful 2018 conversation, activist Angela Davis and anti-racism educator Jane Elliott broke down what true allyship looks like—and what it doesn’t. Their message? Being “not racist” isn’t enough. White allies must actively challenge systems of oppression, not just acknowledge them.

Fast forward to 2025:

• Books on Black history are being banned.
• The term “DEI” is under attack.
• Performative activism is on the rise.

So what does real allyship look like today? And how does it compare to historic examples like Mary White Ovington, a white woman who helped co-found the NAACP in 1909?

Let’s break it down.

Performative vs. Genuine Allyship

Angela Davis has long argued that true allyship is not about centering yourself—it’s about leveraging privilege to fight oppression.

Jane Elliott goes further:

“If you want to be an ally, stop congratulating yourself and start doing the work.”

Performative allyship is:
Posting a black square during #BlackLivesMatter but staying silent when policies threaten Black communities.
Saying “I don’t see color” instead of addressing systemic racism.
Advocating for diversity only when it’s politically convenient.

Genuine allyship is:
Speaking up—even when it’s uncomfortable.
Supporting policies that challenge racial disparities.
Using resources, influence, and privilege to amplify Black voices.

This isn’t new. History has always separated the performative from the real. And no example makes that clearer than Mary White Ovington.

Mary White Ovington: A Case Study in True Allyship

Angela Davis reminds us that white allies have a role in dismantling white supremacy—but it requires more than sympathy.

Mary White Ovington understood this in 1909.

She was a white woman born into privilege.
She had a choice: ignore racial injustice or take action.
She chose action—and helped co-found the NAACP.

Her moment of awakening? The Springfield Race Riot of 1908—where white mobs murdered Black residents and burned their homes. Instead of offering thoughts and prayers, she helped build the nation’s most influential civil rights organization.

She worked alongside W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, and James Weldon Johnson—not for them, but with them. She wrote books, challenged segregation, and never backed down, even when it made her a target.

Ovington once wrote:

“If we deny full expression to a race, if we restrict its education, stifle its intellectual and aesthetic impulses, we make it impossible to fairly gauge its ability.”

She understood that Black progress was tied to national progress.

That’s what allyship looks like.

The daily newspaper (today social media & television) has become a universal means of keeping people informed. The radio too, has become an important means of gaining access to the public. Since it is easy for men of wealth and power to use the newspaper and radio (today television & social media) as instruments of propaganda, the average citizen must be able to differentiate between truth and falsehood, he must not permit himself to be a victim of rumor propaganda and downright misrepresentation and falsehood. He must read his newspapers (watch TV and post) with intelligence and discrimination, to quote Henry Wallace, “In the democracy of tomorrow, people will have to be intelligently free from prejudice that neither the wealthy, interested in private control of government for personal ends, nor demagogues, interested in their jobs, will be able to create deception and illusion.”

Can you give a brief history of the possible source Pythagoras’ knowledge? Pythagoras is an Greek philosopher, mathematician and scientist during 495-570 BC. It is legend that Pythagoras traveled through out Egypt for 10 years and studied the esoteric arts under various priesthoods. Where he was initiated by the Egyptian priesthood of the mysteries schools of the Magi or magicians. Egypt is possibly gained the foundation of his advanced esoteric arts.
How did the philosopher Pythagoras envision the foundation of advanced scientific theories within nature?  Humankind has been in contact with superior levels of divine powers from the stars as  knowledge, reason and wisdom passed through the evolution of humanity. One way. this evolution has been harmonized is through sound frequency and vibration. Pythagoras the great philosopher, brought to our awareness the science of math, geometry and music. That the universe is at a constant state of vibration and harmony that even the planets emit.  Through his theory of the music of spheres and the modern string theory the universe operates as a harmonious whole. Our Senses are Windows in our sphere of Ignorance

Now the five windows of our senses give us hardly less imperfect knowledge of the wider world that is presented to us. Each of them is very limited in its range. The sense of sight covers but a small portion of the infinite gamut of vibrations of which visible light forms a part, the sense of hearing extends over a very small part of another range of vibrations to which sound is due, while the senses of touch, taste and smell although more closely connected than those of sight and hearing, are in themselves no less narrowly limited.

If the windows of our senses were  more widely opened they would finally blend together, thus giving us a complete view of the universe in all its relations. We can see how limited our sense of sight is when we consider that there are animals which see rays of light that are entirely invisible to our eyes.

Our aim must be to open other windows of Sense.

All the efforts of science hitherto have been directed to the bringing together and comparing of the impressions made by our five limited senses. In this way we arrive at more or less conclusions concerning things that are not directly appreciable by the senses. But this is a very indirect and imperfect road to knowledge. The final result of all our progress ought to be, and doubtless will be to open to other windows or widen those already existing, so that eventually the universe will be directly known to us with clearness and completeness of which at present we can form no conception.
