In a powerful 2018 conversation, activist Angela Davis and anti-racism educator Jane Elliott broke down what true allyship looks like—and what it doesn’t. Their message? Being “not racist” isn’t enough. White allies must actively challenge systems of oppression, not just acknowledge them.

Fast forward to 2025:

• Books on Black history are being banned.
• The term “DEI” is under attack.
• Performative activism is on the rise.

So what does real allyship look like today? And how does it compare to historic examples like Mary White Ovington, a white woman who helped co-found the NAACP in 1909?

Performative vs. Genuine Allyship

Angela Davis has long argued that true allyship is not about centering yourself—it’s about leveraging privilege to fight oppression.

“If you want to be an ally, stop congratulating yourself and start doing the work.”

Performative allyship is:
Posting a black square during #BlackLivesMatter but staying silent when policies threaten Black communities.
Saying “I don’t see color” instead of addressing systemic racism.
Advocating for diversity only when it’s politically convenient.

Genuine allyship is:
Speaking up—even when it’s uncomfortable.
Supporting policies that challenge racial disparities.
Using resources, influence, and privilege to amplify Black voices.

This isn’t new. History has always separated the performative from the real. And no example makes that clearer than Mary White Ovington.

Mary White Ovington: A Case Study in True Allyship

Angela Davis reminds us that white allies have a role in dismantling white supremacy—but it requires more than sympathy.

Mary White Ovington understood this in 1909.

She was a white woman born into privilege.
She had a choice: ignore racial injustice or take action.
She chose action—and helped co-found the NAACP.

Her moment of awakening? The Springfield Race Riot of 1908—where white mobs murdered Black residents and burned their homes. Instead of offering thoughts and prayers, she helped build the nation’s most influential civil rights organization.

She worked alongside W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, and James Weldon Johnson—not for them, but with them. She wrote books, challenged segregation, and never backed down, even when it made her a target.

Ovington once wrote:

“If we deny full expression to a race, if we restrict its education, stifle its intellectual and aesthetic impulses, we make it impossible to fairly gauge its ability.”

She understood that Black progress was tied to national progress.

That’s what allyship looks like.

Ans. God is everywhere, for He is omnipresent. God fills all space darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”

Ques. What is man ?

Man is made in the image and likeness of God ; and, as God is Spirit, man must be spiritual, and not material. Man is the highest manifestation of God. Man is the offspring of God, and as such he partakes of the divine attributes of God.

Ques. What is the body?

Ans. The body is the outward expression of the soul. The soul made visible, existing only as a shadow, with no independent life of its own. It is our servant, given to us for the uses of the soul. We should care for it as we would for a horse, and not allow it to control us any more than we would allow the horse to control us. We are spirit ; we have a body and we have a soul. Not that we will be a spirit sometime, but that we are, Spirit now.

Ques. What is the soul ?

Ans. The soul is made up of our experiences and through the development of the intellect. This soul we can make mortal or immortal. By having spiritual thoughts and aspirations we make it immortal. We also have an animal soul that controls the involuntary actions of the body ; so if we should lose the soul’s reasoning powers, and forget all we ever knew, our bodies would be controlled wholly by the animal soul.

Ques. Is the soul in the body?

Ans. The soul permeates the whole body, but is not limited to it. The soul neither lives in the body nor from it, for they are one and the same, the body being only the visible expression of the soul.

Ques. What is the Infinite Mind ?

Ans. The mind which is unchangeable and pure is the Infinite Mind, or God.

Ques. What is the Finite Mind?

Ans. The finite mind is that mind which is capable of reasoning and is changeable. As this mind comes into the understanding of God it perceives spiritual things, and the more understanding we have the more perfect we become, thus fulfilling the Scripture which says, ” Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father which is in heaven is perfect.”

Ques. What is the Conscious Mind ?

Ans. That mind to which we are awake is the conscious mind.

Ques. What is the Unconscious Mind?

Ans. That mind to which we are not awake is the unconscious mind.

Ques. Is God in us ?

Ans. God is everywhere, and so must be in us. He is the ever-acting and all-pervading life of the universe.
